Southcoast Murders & Mysteries
 New Bedford, Massachusetts

The primary passion is investigating, researching and documenting murders, unsolved mysteries, crimes and missing people.
We use verified evidence to accurately document the cases. Our research into the cases at times requires very strict confidentiality. Information used may come from many sources, including public information, family and investigators.

                                                                                          Unsolved Murders

These crimes should never be forgotten. Today, as time goes by and leads dry up, official resources are often diverted to newer cases. Over time these cases become stagnant and are not able to be actively investigated. The passage of time sometimes helps with for new information. Relationships deteriorate, friendships wane, people find religion, guilt sets in, people talk. All of these factors can result in “new” sources of information. Although we frequently hear of old cases being solved, it is usually a result of DNA advances, not active investigation. Family members have been waiting years and decades for answers to how and why their loved ones have been murdered. These families have been patient throughout the years, only to be told "we are working on it". The system has no way of proving law enforcement is even trying to solve these cases.

                                        Margaret Ann Nunes 1987
William Marquetty arrived in Florida from Cuba June 13, 1980. After arriving William was sent to a refugee detention center in Wisconsin for four (4) before being transferred to the NcNeill Federal Penitentiary in the State of Washington. William remained detained for ten (10) months, during this detainment he applied for political asylum, which was denied on October 29,1980.
     In May 1981 William was
transferred to the federal penitentiary in Atlanta Georgia. He remained there for ten (10) months before he was released March 18, 1982. A Cuban refugee group sponsored William and three (3) others, bringing them to Boston Massachusetts to start a new life. William obtained a job as a dishwasher at the Olympic Restaurant in Quincy and shared a New Bedford apartment at 193 Weld Street with his common-law wife.

On March 6, 1986, the MBTA Police (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Police) arrested and charged William with open and gross lewdness. William was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on March 10, 1986. The case was then continued to April 9, 1986, when William admitted to facts sufficient for a guilty finding. Judge William J. Tierney continued the case without a finding for six months, but as part of the sentence, Tierney ordered that William be evaluated by a court mental health clinic.

Between December 30, 1986, and January 19, 1987, four (4) women, Aphrodite Plakias (27), Lois Walker (27), Kelda Caldwell (27) and Patricia Sullivan (41) were attacked and stabbed as they walked or jogged alone in Quincy and Milton.  In January 1987, MBTA Police investigators turned over a photograph of William to a special task force formed to investigate the stabbings. William was among 8 to 10 men who fit the physical description of the stabbing suspect.
Quincy police took William into custody on a traffic warrant and questioned him about the stabbings. However, he was released and not charged because he was operating a green car at the time, and witnesses had identified the suspect as driving an orange car.

January 6,1987, Stabbing New Bedford
On January 6, 1987, a 13-year-old female was critically wounded as a result of stab wounds while waiting for her school bus. William was the "the prime suspect" in the stabbing.

February 9,1987, Margaret Nunes Murder - New Bedford
Margaret Nunes (29) rented an apartment in the building where William once lived.  Margaret was found dead in a snowbank a short distance from her home. William was connected to Margaret's murder based on forensic evidence, including hair and fiber analysis performed at the FBI laboratories in Washington. Margaret was laid to rest in St John's Cemetery.

March 19, 1987, Ann Marie Gillietti Murder - Roslindale
Ann M Gillietti (29) was discovered by her sister Diane dead on the floor of her apartment at 60 Archdale Road in Roslindale. Ann had been stabbed fifty-three (53) times and sexually assaulted with a foreign object. Investigators learned William's wife's mother lived in the same building as Ann. William's vehicle was registered to the same address.
The next day investigators made contact with Norberto Morles, Ann's boyfriend and William's brother-in-law, who resided in New Bedford. Norberto traveled to West Roxbury Police Department to meet with investigators. Norberto explained he dated Ann, but due to him living in New Bedford to distance was too much. Norberto hadn't seen Ann in three (3) weeks.
Norberto admitted William spoke with him three (3) hours prior to the discovery of Ann's body. William informed Norberto that Ann "had been stabbed many times" and was dead. Ann Buried in New Calvary Cemetery in Mattapan.

March 24,1987, Search Warrant 193 Weld Street New Bedford
William stood with police outside his New Bedford home, as police searched his green Pontiac Ventura for the traces of blood, hair, and fibers. Police found under the front seat, just where William said it would be found, an eight-inch hunting knife that police believe was used to kill Ann. Investigators also recovered, from the roof liner of the vehicle, a second knife, which was sent for testing to determine if it was used in the other stabbings. Sneakers were also recovered that matched footprints recovered Ann's murder scene.

William's Confession
William confessed to killing Ann Gillieti, Margaret Nunes and stabbing the four (4) women.

Verdict William Marquetty
In 1988 William was sentenced to 18 to 20 years for each of the four stabbings, for a total of 72 to 80 years in prison.  July 1990 William was convicted of 1st degree murder of Margaret Nunes and sentenced to life in prison.
